“If you had ten times the chores placed on you, and you wanted to do something that would make you happy, it don’t make a difference what responsibilities lie ahead of you, you’re do it was because in the end, you’ll be happy learning something you wanted to learn,” Malachi said.

“Well, now that you put it like that. I guess I can do it,” Little Malachi said.

Malachi dropped a hand on his nephew’s shoulder. “My young nephew, there will be times when you think you can’t do something, and times when you feel you don’t have the strength to see something through. It’s times like those that will call on your character to get stronger or lose the desire of what you want to do. Only you can make the choice while considering which road to choose in life. Do you understand?” Malachi asked.

  “Yes, Uncle Malachi.”

“Good. We’ll start your guitar lessons today,” Malachi said.

“Huh? What? Now? Uncle Malachi. I have too many things to do today. Grandpa wants me to help him chop some wood. Why? I don’t know. It’s hot today. Grandma wants me to help her peel some apples for an apple pie. Why? She already has three bowls of them still sitting in the window from last week. After that, Pa wants me to clean my room, which I think ain’t right because it’s my room, and if I can sleep in a messy room who should tell me when to clean it. When all that is—“

“Little Malachi. You’re telling me stories that have nothing to do with you learning to play the guitar,” Malachi said patiently. “All of those things you mentioned are part of life. You can’t get around them.”

Little Malachi began kicking the dirt while looking at his feet. He dug his hands deep into his pants pockets.

“So, what do you want to do?” Malachi asked.

Little Malachi looked up. “Learn the guitar,” he whispered.

Malachi smiled. He took his nephew’s hand, and they began walking to his house.

“I hope you ain’t got no chores for me to do at your house, Uncle Malachi. I mean everyone is working me like a mule, and I’m only ten years old,” Little Malachi said.

Malachi felt a feeling of warmth course through his body, as he glanced down at the little boy who was given his name. To him, it felt good to have a place where a man could call home.

“To help you get through some of those chores, I’ll tell you some stories about my upbringing along with your mother,” Malachi said.

“What kind of stories? Ma has stories to talk about?” Little Malachi asked. “I find that as a surprise. All she talks about is doing chores.”

Malachi laughed. “Stories you can tell your children one day. And, yes, before your mother was a mother, she was a young girl,” Malachi said.

“I hope it ain’t about no chores, because I don’t need to tell my kids about working as a mule in a field,” Little Malachi said shaking his small head. “Only thing I need now is a yoke, a harness, and a bit in my mouth, and I’ll be a mule tending to the fields every damn morning. Did you ever have to work like everyone is making me work when you were younger?”

Malachi looked at his nephew. “Stop cussing, and, yes I did work not only like a mule but with a stubborn, hardhead mule in my younger days tending the farm. He shook his head and began to laugh.

“It’s not funny, Uncle Malachi. That’s all I do around here is chores. I wish I had some help,” Little Malachi said.

Malachi laughed harder realizing that life had come full circle for him.

“I really do need some help,” Little Malachi said, as he looked up at his uncle. He frowned. “I hope you tell me the joke because I don’t see anything funny about doing chores.”
